July 17th, 2020

Good morning Avalon families!

We are getting closer to our virtual start date of July 27, less than two weeks and we are back into learning!  Thank you for all of the Facebook messages, email, and phone calls. The Avalon staff want you to know we appreciate our parents and the level of support has been amazing. We understand your frustration and the hardship this shutdown is causing. All of our teachers are looking forward to the day we can get back to in person instruction. This email is meant to address the top question that many of you have had regarding Zoom meetings and attendance.

We have received many messages with questions and concerns about starting up with virtual learning.  Rest assured, we understand your concerns.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  •  The Zoom meetings are meant to provide time for the teacher and the students to connect, check-in, and ask questions, and begin building positive relationships.

  • The instruction for the day will be conducted through the Acellus program and be accessible throughout the day at the student’s own pace.  The reason that Avalon has chosen to use Acellus is the level of flexibility it will provide to the students as well as the parents and can be worked into your schedule.

  • Students will be marked in attendance:

    •  if they attend any of the Zoom sessions or

    •  access the Acellus lessons during that day.

Our goal is to work with parents and families to support your child’s learning as best as we can.

We will be sending out information very soon regarding Google Classroom, please check your email regularly so no important communications are missed.

Again, thank you for your continued support. Please continue to reach out with questions and concerns so that we can do our best for All our students and familes!

Sincerely,
Mike McCord, Excalibur Executive Director

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I wanted to provide you with the latest update regarding the impact of the Covid-19 virus and our distance learning plan. As you know, in light of the current situation  regarding the unprecedented shut down of schools in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus and in order to protect our community Arizona Department of Health, the Governor’s, and Arizona Department of Education has made the decision to close school to students until the 17th of August. This means that traditional, in-school instruction is on hold until August.

During this difficult time, I want to assure you that our faculty and staff are working diligently to ensure that we have the resources available to support our students and employees through these challenging times and that the students are engaged during the extended school closure.

Distance Learning

Although Avalon Campus has been closed, our teachers have been working remotely off campus. They have been meeting through Zoom conference calls. Collaboration and planning have with their grade level teams to prepare for the start of school on July 27th. To our returning parents we will continue to use the Acellus. Log in information will remain the same. To our new parents and students, you will be receiving an additional email with all pertinent information to log in and begin your classes.

I encourage you to regularly check your email, our school website, and Facebook page for updates.

Distance Learning Weekly Schedule

In order to provide our families, teachers, and students some consistency and organization Avalon will be adopting the following schedule effective July 27th, 2020.

All students will be attending a Zoom meeting with their teacher at 8:30 am to 9:00 during this time the teacher will check in with students to answer and question and do a short review to start the day.

From 11:30-11:50 students will attend a “Read Aloud”. The teacher will be reading a story to the students via Zoom.

A second check in will take place from 2:00 to 2:30 pm via Zoom again to check in with students and to answer questions that have come up from the day.

During the times in between students are expected to complete course work in Acellus working toward their weekly goals.

Individuals Education Plan IEP and 504 plans.

If you have an IEP or 504 Plan meeting coming up, your child’s case manager (Special Education Teacher) will be contacting you soon. Since there are no face to face meetings at this time, IEP and 504 meeting will be done either by Zoom or conference calls on the phone.

Special Education Teachers will be contacting you with additional information concerning students daily schedule and use of Google Classroom to meet IEP service requirements and goals.

I know there is a lot of information presented to you in this letter but wanted to keep you updated with what is going on for the start of the school year. Avalon is committed to keeping your child’s learning productive and engaging, but we are also aware of the uncertainty and stress these changes have not just on you but on your child.

We will not inundate your child with busy work, but want them engaged in the Acellus program and attending the daily meetings to help keep the learning on track. This is still a new experience for all of us, and we are most successful when we work together and keep the lines of communication open and flowing. Let us know we can help and support your child’s learning during these difficult times.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school at 480-671-4584 the office will be open from 8:30am to 3:30 pm daily Monday-Friday with limited staffing. Please feel free to email Mr. McCord at mmccord@excaliburschools.org or Mrs. Brickley at jbrickley@excaliburschools.org

We are working to keep things as normal as possible during these most difficult and uncertain times. Please be safe and healthy.

Dear Arizona families, educators, school leaders, and education community members,

In our roles as Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction, we stand united in working with you to keep Arizona’s kids, families, and school communities safe and healthy.

Over the past few weeks and in coordination with public health officials, we have been in close communication with school administrators to provide guidance and be a resource as it relates to the recent outbreak of COVID-19. The health and safety of all our students is our top priority, and we’ve worked hard to keep our school doors open — these are important assets in people’s lives and many families rely on them for nutrition and access to health care.
Both of our staffs have been working together in partnership through the weekend, and we’ve been in touch with educational leaders on the frontlines. Currently, staffing and potential absences are a concern in many districts. Many schools and school districts have announced closures.
Today, we are jointly announcing the closure of all schools from Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, March 27, 2020. We will continue to work together and assess this situation on a 24/7 basis.
It’s important for families and parents to know that while this will address operational issues, doing this will not stop the spread of COVID-19.

We remain in constant contact with local officials to ensure that we are doing what is best for the Avalon Families. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and will continue to update you.  Thank you for your cooperation, patience, and understanding during this unprecedented time.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Avalon Elementary School! Our school’s motto is Believe, Achieve, and Succeed. We are able to apply this motto daily through our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) behavior management philosophy at our school.

We believe that children have higher success rates in schools with a positive support system. Our school-wide goal is to encourage and nurture all students as they reach and exceed their highest potential. Here at Avalon, we believe parents are an essential component for student success. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to get involved at Avalon Elementary by either volunteering in their child’s classroom or other programs throughout the school.

We are very excited to meet new families and students and love seeing all the returning students. It is going to be a successful year and we can’t wait to see what all the students accomplish this year!

Most Sincerely,
Avalon Staff
